The sixth child of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, the family who rose to notoriety on reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jinger Duggar Vuolo grew up under the influence of IBLP. Now married to a minister, Jinger opens up about her journey to disentangle the fear-filled lessons of her childhood and lean instead into the actual word and preachings of Jesus.
To start, I have to say I was very fascinated by the Duggar clan when their show was popular on TV. In what I expect is similar to how Jinger explains being fascinated by the outside world when they travelled, I was intrigued by this family and how seemingly untouched they were by the culture of our society. Jinger and Jessa were always my favorites. So it seemed natural to be inclined to read Jinger’s books. I think it is a huge and brave step for Jinger to come to grips with and publicly denounce Gothard and IBLP as a community. She even briefly addresses Josh and his hypocritical ways. I do hope that her journey continues and she is able to eventually open her eyes and see that her parents were not innocent victims of Gothard and all the implications that cascade from their damage. What a hard task she’s been confronted with! I’m thankful she is willing to do the hard work and that she has what seems like a caring and supportive husband, and in law in Ben to help her on this path. My only critique is just that I’d like deeper discussion on things and more personal insight. I do recommend this for fans of Jinger, the Duggar clan, and those who need encouragement on their recovery from an IBLP like religious experience.
