While attending college, Shay Evans and her two roommates were seduced by a man who did his best to brainwash them about the ways of the world and themselves. Shay and her friend, Laurel, were the only two to escape. Fast forward eight years and Shay has cultivated a new way of life for herself in Texas with her husband. As a free lance writer under a pseudonym, she has been able to keep her life private. But when she is listening to the investigative podcast of her best friend from high school and learns of Laurel’s death, she is thrown off her game. Piecing together the details of her friend’s supposed suicide, she is sure of two things: her friend did not commit suicide and she must investigate this to find justice for Laurel and closure for herself.
I will start by saying this morphed into something a bit different than I was expecting but I really loved this book. Anytime a book can make me more than anxious for but actually tied to a character, the author has done something very right. The way this unfolded was truly remarkable but also tangibly painful. You are allowed into the psyche of Shay and so you understand that while her behavior seems reckless, she sees it as the only way and why she feels these dangers and evils are necessary. I recommend for anyone who is into psychological thrillers and mysteries.
